Logo Trends in India - 2010

Designing a logo for a company or an organization is one of the toughest job in the industry. For the normal eye it would just mean creating some symbol or playing around with typography (in most of the cases using the first alphabet of the company’s name).

But for the designing team and the organization it would mean much more than just creating a nice looking symbol. It reflects the company’s philosophy, vision and mission and strengthen its existing image in the eye of the end user.

The most difficult part while redesigning or revamping a logo is to keep the old flavour and add something new to create something amazingly refreshing. Lot of agencies are successful in doing so and few are not.

Last year was no different; lot of organizations went through the process of revamping their existing logos. Lets have a closer look at this logos and see what went right or wrong……

Simplicity

I always talk about simple, clean and effective design with not only my colleagues but also with my prospective clients and other people from the design community. So it was not surprising that I thought of writing a blog on simplicity in design. But then, I felt instead of writing the same stuff again in my own way …why not share what other people have to say about simplicity. Simple ..isnt it?

“Graphical elegance is often found in simplicity of design and complexity of data.”

“The best graphics are about the useful and important, about life and death, about the universe. Beautiful graphics do not traffic with the trivial.”

Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple.
– Charles Mingus

Simplicity is the soul of efficiency.
-- Austin Freeman, "The Eye of Osiris"

...it is simplicity that is difficult to make.
-- Bertholdt Brecht

Perfection (in design) is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but rather when there is nothing more to take away.
-- Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

If we complicate things they get less simple.
-- Professor at Cambridge University

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
-- Albert Einstein

Just a Thought. " Life is Very Simple. We humans make it Complicated. "

How much would it cost ?

Very often we (all of us in the design business ) hear this from our prospective clients. Or some or the other variation of the same question. It’s a very simple and straight forward question asked, but in reality it’s a very big question and chances are you won’t get the right answer. Would you ever ask a tailor to stitch a trousers without telling him your requirements and measurements ?? Web Design is no different.

It’s not easy to give a pricing before knowing the exact nature and scope of the project. Well, unless if you want to buy a readymade template. Lot of variables determine the price of designing a good website. Starts from whether it is a static pages site or a site which has a database. How big the site will be, in terms of pages and content. The important question what the site wants to achieve, how it wants its users to perceive.

Does the project involve maintenance ? if it’s a static page site the job is much more easier then handling a database driven website. How frequent the updations are goin to come. Will the updations be only in the content or there would be some sections adding or deleting or lot of image work , product updations, photo gallery updation if the site is for a photographer etc..

Also one needs to check if the website is going to run on a CMS ( Content management system ) or whether the website needs one.

There are lot of other features which are equally very important. Custom Photography, Copywriting or use of flash. Its completely a different ball game if the site is supposed to be entirely designed in flash.

The whole idea is to get an exact and accurate costing for what you exactly want. Or to put it in a layman’s language to get your money’s worth or Paisa Vasool Design. So before you go and ask a webdesigner or a web designing firm how much they charge, it’s a good idea to figure out what you want from them, tell them exactly your needs and now there will be more chances of you getting a right answer.
